Microsoft Copilot Studio Review 2026

Microsoft's low-code agent builder gives Microsoft 365 shops a fast path to custom AI agents, but credit-based pricing can surprise at scale.

Pricing Plans

Plan Cost Best For Capacity
Pay-as-You-Go $0.01 per credit Pilots, variable usage Billed through a linked Azure subscription, no commitment
Copilot Credit Capacity Pack $200/month Steady usage 25,000 credits per pack, pooled across the tenant
Pre-purchase plan (Copilot Credit Commit Units) Quoted Enterprise deployments Up to 20% savings for paying up front; overage billed pay-as-you-go

Important: Copilot Studio capacity is sold on its own; pay-as-you-go needs an Azure subscription. Microsoft 365 Copilot ($30/user/month, billed yearly, requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan) includes employee-facing Copilot Studio agent usage at no credit charge, within fair-use limits. If prepaid consumption reaches 125% of capacity, custom agents are disabled until capacity is added.

Analysis

What We Like

  • Low-code agent builder aimed at business analysts as well as developers
  • Agents can use the Power Platform connector library plus custom connectors
  • Publishes to Teams, Microsoft 365 Copilot, SharePoint, websites, mobile apps, WhatsApp, Facebook and Azure Bot Service channels, with voice billed per minute
  • Employee-facing agents used by Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users incur no credit charge, within fair-use limits

What We Don't

  • Credit-based pricing is hard to forecast: one response can stack several billed features, for example 2 credits for a generative answer plus 10 for tenant graph grounding
  • Steep learning curve for advanced use cases; Power Platform experience assumed for custom connectors
  • The trial lets you build and test agents but not publish them

Detailed Feature Review

Agent Builder & Generative AI

Copilot Studio is Microsoft's graphical, low-code tool for building agents and agent flows, aimed at business analysts and operations teams as well as developers. You can ground an agent in public websites, uploaded documents, SharePoint, Dataverse and enterprise data indexed through connectors. For SharePoint and Dataverse sources the agent only surfaces content the asking user can access.

One critical limitation: generative answers depend on your knowledge quality. If your documentation is fragmented or contradictory, the agent will give poor answers. Budget for knowledge governance upfront.

Models

OpenAI models are the default for new agents. Since late 2025 admins can also enable Anthropic Claude models for orchestration and prompts, and bring-your-own models from Azure AI Foundry are supported and billed separately from Copilot Credits.

Connectors

Every Power Platform connector is available to Copilot Studio agents, from Office 365 and Salesforce to Dropbox and Google services, and you can build custom connectors for anything else. Non-trivial custom connectors raise the skill floor beyond what a business analyst usually has.

Channels & Voice

Agents publish to Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot, SharePoint, WhatsApp, a custom website, a mobile app, Facebook, and Azure Bot Service channels such as Slack, Telegram and Twilio. Agents authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID by default; a No authentication option makes an agent public to anyone with the link, but it then cannot use tools that need user credentials. Voice is billed per minute at 10, 35 or 75 Copilot Credits depending on tier.

Limitations & Constraints

Low-code platforms trade flexibility for speed. Complex business logic or agents that orchestrate many connectors with heavy conditional logic will push you into agent flows or Power Automate, which stretches the low-code promise.

Integrations & Connectors

Copilot Studio agents use Power Platform connectors. Examples:

Supported Integrations

Microsoft 365 Teams Outlook SharePoint Dynamics 365 Power Automate Power BI Azure Services Dataverse Salesforce SAP ServiceNow Zendesk Slack Google Workspace Custom connectors

Ideal Use Cases

Customer Service Automation

Helpdesk agents that answer common queries (password resets, account status, billing questions) from your knowledge sources and hand complex issues to a human.

Employee Helpdesk & HR

Internal agents for leave requests, IT onboarding, policy questions and expense approvals, published in Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Sales Support & Lead Qualification

Qualify inbound leads through conversational AI, gather qualification data, and route to sales teams in Dynamics 365. Agents can answer product questions, schedule demos, and collect contact info without manual effort.

Voice Agents

Voice agents for call routing and FAQ resolution with escalation to support teams, billed per minute of voice.

Alternatives to Consider

If Copilot Studio doesn't fit your needs, consider:

Make.com

Make (formerly Integromat) is a visual workflow automation platform. Unlike Copilot Studio, it is vendor-agnostic, which suits heterogeneous stacks and one-off automation projects.

Zapier AI Actions

Zapier is a no-code automation platform with a large library of pre-built integrations, and its AI features let you describe workflows in plain English. It is built for backend task automation more than customer-facing chat agents. See our Make vs. Zapier comparison for details.

ServiceNow AI Agent Studio

ServiceNow builds AI agents into its platform through AI Agent Studio. It suits IT operations and service delivery teams already on ServiceNow. Drawback: building custom agents needs the higher AI licence tiers.

Our Verdict

Microsoft Copilot Studio is the default agent builder to evaluate for Microsoft 365 organizations that want conversational agents without heavy engineering. Its strengths are the Power Platform connectors, the channel list and the Microsoft 365 Copilot inclusion; its weakness is credit pricing that is hard to forecast.

For Microsoft-first enterprises: Run a pilot and load-test credit consumption early, using Microsoft's agent usage estimator, before you size capacity packs or a pre-purchase plan.

For non-Microsoft organizations: If your stack is Salesforce, Google or heterogeneous SaaS, look at Make or Zapier first.

Bottom line: It deserves a pilot if you're Microsoft-invested. Go in knowing the credit model needs load-testing and governance to avoid surprises at scale, and that agents are disabled at 125% of prepaid capacity unless pay-as-you-go is switched on.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Copilot Credit is the unit Copilot Studio bills agent usage in. Microsoft publishes the rates: 1 credit for a classic answer, 2 for a generative answer, 5 for an agent action, 10 for tenant graph grounding and 13 per 100 agent flow actions, with reasoning models adding a premium rate per 1,000 tokens. A 25,000-credit pack costs $200 a month; pay-as-you-go is $0.01 per credit.
No. Copilot Studio capacity packs and pay-as-you-go (through an Azure subscription) are sold on their own, and the trial needs a work or school account. Microsoft 365 Copilot, which requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan, adds no-charge usage for employee-facing agents within fair-use limits.
Yes. Agents publish to Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot, SharePoint, WhatsApp, custom websites, mobile apps, Facebook and Azure Bot Service channels. Agents use Microsoft Entra ID authentication by default; choosing No authentication lets anyone with the link chat with the agent, but it can then not use tools that need user credentials.
Microsoft allows some overage. At 125% of prepaid capacity, custom agents are disabled: conversations in progress finish, then users see a message that the agent has reached its usage limit. Agent flow runs are blocked once prepaid capacity is used up. Linking a pay-as-you-go meter avoids enforcement, and admins can cap credit use per agent.
