Cohere has never had a consumer product. Founded in Toronto in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, Ivan Zhang, and Nick Frosst, it builds large language models for enterprise, with private deployment options.
The Command Family
Cohere's main product line is the Command family of language models, built for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool use, and structured business workflows.
Command R+ supports a 128K context window. Command A (03-2025) extends this to 256K tokens, and the current list also includes Command A Reasoning, Command A Vision and Command A Plus (05-2026). The models support tool use (function calling), enabling agents that can query databases, call APIs, and take multi-step actions in workflows.
Embed and Rerank
For semantic search and RAG pipelines, Cohere offers Embed (current versions v4.0 and v5.0, 128K context) and Rerank (3.5 and 4.0). Rerank works on the second stage of a RAG pipeline: it reorders a broad set of retrieved candidates by relevance before they reach the LLM.
Private Deployment
Cohere can be deployed in the customer's own virtual private cloud, on-premises, or on Cohere's dedicated, Cohere-managed Model Vault. Its models are also offered through OCI, Azure, AWS and Google Cloud.
North: Cohere's Enterprise Agent Platform
Beyond the raw API, Cohere offers North, which it describes as an agentic AI platform "that runs where your data lives": grounded search and Q&A, content creation, and agents and automations, with guardrails and admin controls. North can run in your own VPC, on-premises, or on Model Vault, and connects to existing tools through APIs and built-in connectors.
Fine-Tuning and Customisation
Cohere deprecated its self-serve fine-tuning feature on 15 September 2025. Customization is now a custom-priced engagement through sales.
Security and Compliance
Cohere's Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, U.K. Cyber Essentials, GDPR, CCPA and HIPAA. Its FAQ says Cohere may sign a Business Associate Agreement for custom model development engagements, but the BAA does not cover Cohere-hosted products, and customers should not submit Personal Health Information through its SaaS services. Healthcare buyers should read that line before shortlisting.
Limitations and Honest Caveats
The developer ecosystem is smaller than OpenAI's. Teams evaluating Cohere should plan for more self-directed implementation and greater reliance on Cohere's documentation.
A production key requires an application through the "Go to Production" form, and enterprise, North and private deployment pricing is quote-only.
