Comprehensive Luma AI Dream Machine Review

Ray3 and Ray3.2

Luma unveiled Ray3 on 18 September 2025, calling it "the world's first reasoning video model and the first to generate high fidelity 16 bit HDR." It introduced a Draft Mode for fast, low-cost previews that can then be re-rendered at full quality. Ray3 generates native 1080p, with a neural upscaler for 4K.

Ray3.2 is Luma's newest video model. It powers text-to-video, image-to-video, Modify Video and Reframe, renders at 360p (Draft), 540p, 720p (default) and 1080p, and generates native 16-bit color. HDR costs 2x the SDR credits, and HDR with EXR frames costs 3x.

Image-to-Video, Keyframes and Modify Video

Ray3.2 accepts up to 16 keyframes in image-to-video and Modify Video; earlier Ray models took a start frame and sometimes an end frame. Modify Video adds performance tracking for skeletal poses and facial performance for up to 8 faces, and runs up to 20 seconds at 24fps. Reframe supports aspect ratios from 9:16 to 21:9.

API for Production Integration

API access is created and managed in the Luma API Platform. The Python SDK installs with pip install lumaai. Passing a callback_url makes Luma POST the generation object to your endpoint with status updates and the video URL when it completes; non-200 responses are retried up to 3 times.

Adobe Firefly

Adobe was the first partner to launch Ray3 outside Dream Machine, in the Firefly Video module and Firefly Boards.

Known Limitations

  • Clip length: native text-to-video and image-to-video clips are 5 or 10 seconds
  • Audio: Ray3.2 text-to-video and image-to-video produce no native audio; Modify Video and Reframe keep the original audio
  • Resolution: Luma's own Ray3.2 tops out at 1080p

Our Verdict

Luma AI: Strong on HDR and Control, Short on Clip Length and Audio

Luma's case rests on Ray3's 16-bit HDR output, keyframe control in Ray3.2, an API with webhooks, and third-party models on the same credit plan. Against that: native clips of 5 or 10 seconds, no native audio, 1080p as the ceiling for Luma's own model, and a $30/month entry price with no free plan on the current pricing page. Teams with an HDR or finishing pipeline have the most reason to shortlist it.
