What We Like & What We Don't

What We Like
  • Commercial safety: Adobe says its models are trained on licensed and public domain content, and eligible enterprise customers can get IP indemnification for select outputs
  • Creative Cloud integration: Generative Fill in Photoshop and Generative Recolor in Illustrator work inside existing workflows
  • Unlimited standard image features on all paid plans
  • Partner models (GPT Image, Gemini, FLUX, Runway, Kling, Luma AI, ElevenLabs) inside the Firefly interface, paid with credits
What We Don't
  • Video is capped by plan: Standard covers up to 20 five-second videos a month; only Premium has unlimited Firefly Video Model access
  • Partner model outputs sit outside Adobe's commercial-safety assurance: Adobe says you are responsible for judging them
  • Requires Adobe ecosystem investment: users outside Creative Cloud get less value than CC subscribers

Adobe Firefly In Depth

What Is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe Firefly is a family of generative AI models for creative work. It powers Generative Fill and Generative Expand in Photoshop, Generative Recolor and Generative Shape Fill in Illustrator, Generative Extend in Premiere Pro, and the standalone Firefly web app for image, video and audio generation.

Adobe positions Firefly on two points: commercial safety and workflow integration. Adobe says Firefly models are trained on licensed content and public domain content where copyright has expired, and that outputs from its own models are safe for commercial use.

Creative Cloud Integration

Generative Fill in Photoshop is the core implementation: select an area, type a prompt, and Firefly generates content that extends backgrounds, adds or removes elements, on a separate generative layer that leaves the original intact.

Generative Recolor and Vector AI in Illustrator

In Illustrator, Generative Recolor generates colour variations of vector artwork from a text description. Generative Shape Fill fills selected shapes with detail and colour in a chosen style, with the prompt optional.

Text-to-Video and Audio

The Firefly Video Model launched in beta at Adobe MAX in October 2024, powering Text to Video, Image to Video and Generative Extend in Premiere Pro. Video and audio features draw on generative credits: Standard covers up to 20 five-second videos and 6 minutes of audio translation a month, and Premium adds unlimited Firefly Video Model access.

Commercial Safety and Enterprise IP Protection

Adobe states that eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification for select Firefly outputs. Procurement teams should confirm in the contract which outputs and which models are covered.

Partner Models

Firefly gives access to partner models alongside Adobe's own: GPT Image, Gemini and FLUX for image; Runway, Kling AI, Luma AI and Topaz Astra for video; and ElevenLabs for audio. Adobe was Luma AI's first partner to launch its Ray3 video model outside Luma's own app, in September 2025.

Partner model generations are premium features that consume generative credits, and Adobe says you are responsible for determining whether content generated by partner models is appropriate for your project.

Use Cases

Where Adobe Firefly Excels

01

Photoshop-Native Image Editing

Photo retouchers and compositing artists use Generative Fill to extend backgrounds, remove objects, replace elements, and composite scenes with AI-generated content, on separate generative layers within existing Photoshop workflows.

02

Commercial Marketing Asset Production

Marketing teams use Firefly to produce visual assets for advertising, social media, website content, and presentations, with IP indemnification available to eligible enterprise customers for select outputs.

03

Brand Asset Variation at Scale

Design teams use Generative Recolor in Illustrator to produce seasonal, regional, and campaign-specific variations of brand assets without manual retheming.

04

Video Content Localisation

Content and media teams use Firefly's audio translation, included on every paid plan up to a monthly limit, to translate video content within the Adobe ecosystem. For teams already using Premiere Pro for video editing, this keeps the localisation workflow in a single platform.

Who It's For

Best For / Who Should Skip It

Best For
  • Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers wanting AI that works within their existing Photoshop and Illustrator workflows
  • Enterprise teams requiring commercial-grade IP protection and indemnification for AI-generated assets
  • Marketing and brand teams producing high volumes of commercial imagery where legal safety is non-negotiable
  • Design agencies producing branded assets across multiple themes, seasons, or regional variations at scale
Who Should Skip It
  • Non-Creative Cloud users: Firefly's strongest features live inside Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro
  • High-volume video users below Premium: Standard covers up to 20 five-second videos a month
  • Budget-constrained solo creators where Firefly Standard's $9.99/month adds cost on top of existing CC subscription
Alternatives

How Adobe Firefly Compares

Our Verdict

Adobe Firefly: The Enterprise-Safe AI Creative Platform

Adobe Firefly is the right choice for creative teams already in Creative Cloud that need AI imagery for commercial work. Adobe's statements on training data, and IP indemnification for eligible enterprise customers, address the risk that makes many organisations hesitant about other tools. Generative Fill in Photoshop is the feature most teams will use daily.

The limits to watch are credits for video and audio, and the fact that partner models sit outside Adobe's own commercial-safety assurance. Paid plans run from $9.99 to $199.99 a month.
